In a shift among Europe’s major aviation hubs, Istanbul Airport surpassed Heathrow Airport as the continent’s busiest airport for passenger traffic in July. Istanbul Airport reported accommodating 8.15 million travelers during the month, outpacing Heathrow’s 7.86 million. This development marked a decline of 1.5% in passenger numbers for Heathrow compared to the same period last year, while Istanbul experienced a 2.3% increase.
The drop in Heathrow’s figures has been partly attributed to disruptions stemming from the ongoing conflict in the Middle East, which has impacted travel behaviors and routes. This situation has reinvigorated calls for the UK government to greenlight Heathrow’s long-debated third runway project. Supporters argue that the expansion, estimated to cost £33 billion, is crucial for boosting the UK’s global connectivity and maintaining its competitive edge in international trade and tourism. The proposed expansion would potentially elevate Heathrow’s annual capacity to approximately 150 million passengers.
Istanbul Airport, a relatively new player in the international airport scene since its opening in 2018, operates on a larger site with its infrastructure allowing for continuous operations around the clock. The airport currently boasts three runways and plans to add a fourth by the end of 2026, further enhancing its capacity and operational flexibility.
Despite Heathrow’s slip in rankings, other UK airports have reported significant growth. Both London Stansted and Manchester airports recorded their highest-ever passenger numbers for July, handling 3.1 million and 3.4 million travelers, respectively. These figures underscore the continued demand for air travel within the UK, even as Heathrow grapples with capacity challenges.
