Amid heightened tensions in the Middle East, US President Donald Trump and Chinese President Xi Jinping met on September 25 to discuss the ongoing conflict, with a focus on Iran’s proposal for a seven-day plan to alleviate hostilities. The plan, as outlined by Iranian Foreign Minister Abbas Araqchi, aims to reopen the strategically critical Strait of Hormuz and resume normal maritime traffic if the United States agrees to its terms.
The Iranian proposal includes several conditions: an end to regional hostilities, the lifting of the US blockade on Iranian ports, the release of frozen Iranian funds, and the removal of oil sanctions. While Iran has expressed its willingness to follow through on this plan, the United States has yet to publicly accept it, though it has acknowledged that discussions through mediators have been constructive, particularly concerning nuclear issues.
During the discussions, President Xi urged both the United States and Iran to revert to the June framework, which had previously led to a temporary ceasefire and to renew negotiations for a broader settlement. This proposal was welcomed by Iran; however, they remain firm on not making concessions related to their nuclear program, especially concerning uranium enrichment.
President Trump, in conversation with Xi, cautioned against China providing any form of support to Iran, directly or indirectly. US Ambassador to China, David Perdue, emphasized that China had reassured Washington of its non-involvement in assisting Iran.
The conflict has significantly impacted energy flows through the Strait of Hormuz, a vital passageway for global oil shipments, and has further exacerbated regional tensions in the Gulf, Yemen, and Lebanon. In response, countries like Saudi Arabia, Pakistan, and Turkey have engaged in talks to enhance military and intelligence cooperation, highlighting the widening security concerns in the region.
