Balanced Stress Enhances Workforce Efficiency and Economic Resilience.

While stress is often linked to burnout and anxiety, not all stress is detrimental, according to health experts. A certain level of short-term stress, known as positive stress or eustress, can actually be beneficial. This form of stress can enhance concentration, increase motivation, and improve performance when tackling critical tasks.

Farheen Belgaumwala, a certified happiness coach, explains that healthy stress typically occurs before significant events like job interviews, public presentations, exams, or when acquiring new skills. Although it might lead to temporary physical responses such as a fast heartbeat or sweaty palms, this stress type promotes focus and aids problem-solving. After overcoming these challenges, individuals often feel more assured and confident.

Problems arise when stress becomes chronic, with little chance for recovery. Prolonged stress resulting from factors like heavy workloads, uncertainty, unrealistic expectations, poor communication, or lack of emotional support can gradually harm both mental and physical health. Without adequate recovery time, chronic stress can decrease productivity, impair emotional well-being, and elevate the risk of burnout.

Experts note that the body often provides early indicators of excessive stress before individuals consciously recognize it. Symptoms such as persistent fatigue, sleep disturbances, frequent headaches, irritability, concentration difficulties, emotional exhaustion, and a constant sensation of tension may signal that stress levels have become unhealthy.

Achieving a healthy balance doesn’t always necessitate drastic changes. Simple strategies like taking brief breaks throughout the day, spending time outdoors, practicing deep breathing exercises, setting realistic boundaries, ensuring adequate sleep, and seeking support from trusted friends, family, or mental health professionals can effectively manage stress. Understanding the distinction between beneficial and harmful stress enables individuals to remain productive while safeguarding their long-term well-being.
