Tesla Roadster Prototype with SpaceX Thrusters Demonstrated as Potential Flying Car

Elon Musk recently unveiled a prototype of the Tesla Roadster 2, incorporating rocket-thruster technology from his aerospace company, SpaceX. In a demonstration held in Texas, the electric sports car showcased its innovative capabilities by driving up a curved ramp and using thrusters to perform aerial maneuvers before safely landing. This event marks a significant step in Musk’s ambitious vision of integrating electric vehicle technology with rocket propulsion.

Musk described this prototype as a potential flying car, highlighting its ability to execute complex aerial movements such as rolls, thanks to altitude controls and rear-mounted thrusters. The demonstration took place remotely to mitigate safety risks, with Musk acknowledging that the vehicle’s operation might not comply with legal standards in all regions.

The Tesla Roadster 2 is slated to enter production in 2028, and it is expected to have a starting price above $200,000. Tesla has announced plans for various versions of the vehicle, including a performance model and a specialized variant equipped with the thrust system. Additionally, a single-seat rocket version featuring a complete flight system is proposed to be available by invitation only.

Despite the exciting capabilities demonstrated, Tesla has cautioned that the flying features are not intended for use on public roads. The prototype’s unveiling underscores Musk’s drive to push the boundaries of automotive and aerospace innovation. However, its practical application, adherence to safety standards, and securing regulatory approval remain significant hurdles to be addressed.
