The recent series of intense heatwaves across Europe this summer has resulted in at least 35,000 excess deaths, with the actual number likely to be much higher as more countries finalize their evaluations. Germany, France, and Spain have reported the highest numbers, collectively accounting for over 25,000 of these deaths. Germany has experienced an estimated 14,000 heat-related fatalities between April and early August, marking the highest summer death toll due to heat since records began. Meanwhile, Spain has documented nearly 5,000 deaths attributed to the heat since May, also setting a grim record.
France has preliminarily reported around 7,300 excess deaths from late May through July, although this figure does not yet include data from August. Other nations, such as the UK, Belgium, the Netherlands, Poland, and Switzerland, have also seen substantial increases in mortality during the heatwaves. The extreme temperatures consistently exceeded 40°C across vast regions of western and central Europe, shattering numerous national and local temperature records.
Scientists attribute the increasing frequency and intensity of such extreme heat events to climate change. Identifying heat-related deaths presents challenges, as the extreme conditions often exacerbate existing cardiovascular, respiratory, and other health issues, rather than being directly recorded as the cause of death.
Experts anticipate the overall death toll in Europe to rise further as delayed mortality data is processed and figures from August are included. This alarming number of deaths underscores the escalating public health risks associated with the intensifying severity of heatwaves.
