Sweden Boosts Economy with 950 Seasonal Berry Picker Approvals

This year, Sweden has significantly increased the number of permits granted to seasonal berry pickers, approving 950 applications compared to just 89 the previous year. The majority of these seasonal workers come from Thailand. This rise is largely attributed to employers’ improved adherence to labor standards, which had previously been a point of concern, leading to many permit applications being denied.

Swedish authorities have noted that several companies have made demonstrable progress in ensuring fair working conditions for their employees, which has resulted in a higher number of approved permits this year. These improvements among employers have played a crucial role in addressing past issues related to the welfare of foreign workers in the berry-picking industry.

In line with updated government regulations, there has been a shift in how these workers are brought into the country. Berry pickers now enter Sweden under the European Union’s seasonal workers directive rather than through traditional work permits. This change is accompanied by a new requirement that these workers must be directly employed by Swedish companies, rather than through intermediary staffing agencies in Thailand. This regulatory update aims to enhance oversight and ensure better protections for the workers.

The expansion of permits is anticipated to benefit Sweden’s berry industry by fulfilling its seasonal labor needs while simultaneously upholding improved employment standards for the international workforce. The changes reflect a concerted effort to balance the demand for labor with the necessity of maintaining ethical working conditions.
