Netherlands Leads Call for Cuts to EU’s Proposed 2028–2034 Budget

As the European Union debates its proposed budget for 2028–2034, a coalition of countries led by the Netherlands is urging significant cuts. The Netherlands, joined by Germany, Sweden, Denmark, Austria, and Finland, opposes the nearly €2 trillion budget plan, arguing that it would lead to an unsustainable rise in EU spending.

These six nations, which are among the top contributors to the EU budget without receiving equivalent financial returns, are advocating for a reduction of several hundred billion euros. They warn that the current proposal would place an undue financial burden on countries that are major net contributors.

The budget discussions have highlighted divisions within the EU. While the Netherlands and its allies push for cuts, other member states like Spain and Italy support a larger budget, emphasizing the need for stronger financial support for poorer regions and sectors such as agriculture.

The ongoing negotiations are crucial as the budget requires unanimous agreement from all 27 EU member states. These talks are expected to continue ahead of a summit scheduled for October, where EU leaders will attempt to reconcile these differing perspectives.
