Longest House Vote in History Paves Way for Trump Tax Bill

A procedural vote for Donald Trump’s highly anticipated tax and spending bill became the longest in US House of Representatives history, lasting over seven hours, before finally paving the way for the legislation. House Speaker Mike Johnson is pushing hard for the bill’s passage, despite significant internal and external opposition over its cost and controversial provisions, highlighting the deep political divisions in Washington.
The marathon vote, which concluded around 4:00 AM in Washington D.C., was on a “rule” essential for beginning debate and setting up a final vote on the “one big beautiful bill act.” This extraordinary delay was a clear indication of the deep disagreements, particularly from a handful of Republican holdouts, who joined Democrats in their objections.
President Donald Trump directly intervened in the legislative process, conducting numerous phone calls and meetings with skeptical Republican lawmakers on Wednesday. He publicly castigated them on Truth Social, demanding, “What are the Republicans waiting for??? What are you trying to prove??? MAGA IS NOT HAPPY, AND IT’S COSTING YOU VOTES!!!” His pressure campaign underscores the urgency he places on this legislation.
The bill, already approved by the Senate, faces a precarious path to final passage in the House. Fiscal conservatives, such as Texas Congressman Keith Self, have lambasted the Senate’s for significantly altering the House’s original framework and for its estimated $3.3 trillion increase to the federal deficit by 2034. Opponents like Congresswoman Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez decry it as a “deal with the devil” that benefits billionaires while harming average Americans.
