Lasting Political Solutions Cannot Be Imposed From Outside, France Declares

French diplomacy has emphasized a core principle in responding to the United States military operation in Venezuela: lasting political solutions cannot be imposed from outside through military force. Foreign Minister Jean-Noël Barrot’s statement following Saturday’s strikes that captured President Nicolás Maduro reflects fundamental French foreign policy convictions about sovereignty and self-determination.
The French position stresses that only the Venezuelan people themselves can legitimately decide their political future, regardless of international opinions about the Maduro government. This principle reflects lessons learned from decades of failed interventions where external military force failed to create sustainable democratic transitions.
UN Secretary General António Guterres has similarly emphasized that political solutions must emerge from within societies through dialogue and peaceful processes rather than being imposed through external military intervention. His warning about dangerous precedents reflects concerns that such operations undermine rather than support democratic development.
US Attorney General Pam Bondi has announced that Maduro and his wife Cilia Flores will face drug trafficking charges in New York, with Secretary of State Marco Rubio confirming the charges relate to narcotics operations. President Trump stated the couple is currently aboard a ship being transported to the United States for prosecution.
The international community has responded with widespread condemnation emphasizing respect for sovereignty and international law. Major powers including China, Russia, and Brazil have criticized the operation, while Latin American reactions have split along ideological lines. Colombia has mobilized its armed forces in anticipation of refugee flows, and security analysts question whether removing Maduro through external force will achieve the Trump administration’s stated goals.
